 Silver Spring Safety Alliance

Picture
The Silver Spring Safety Alliance brings the “neighbors looking out for neighbors” concept to the business community, creating a partnership in progress between downtown Silver Spring businesses and the MCPD 3rd District that builds on the plan to actively reduce and prevent crime through cooperation, education, and most importantly, communication. The Business Watch philosophy is straightforward: take control of what happens in your business community and lessen your chances of becoming a victim.

Alliance History

Ensuring that Silver Spring is safe and welcoming to everyone has always been a priority to members of the Silver Spring business community.  The Silver Spring Safety Alliance is born from the continued partnership and collaboration between the Chamber, the MCPD 3rd District, and invested business and property owners.

In October 2010, a man robbed a bank machine and while there was some footage from nearby cameras, he was able to escape. A police sergeant responsible for the Silver Spring Central Business District reached out to the Chamber to see if they could access member property owner’s cameras to pick up the thief’s trail. Then Chamber CEO & President Jane Redicker connected the police and owners and also connected the idea of establishing a relationship between businesses and the cops serving their area.

Thus, a monthly meeting between the police and member property owners, security personnel, and Chamber leadership was started and continues to this day. These meetings allow the police to educate members on smart safety and crime-prevention practices and to share information on recent incidents in the business community. In turn, members take the opportunity to share resources and details on occurrences they’ve experienced that often help lead to crimes being solved.

The recent rise of crime in Silver Spring required an answer beyond the monthly security meetings and, following the Chamber’s public safety summit in December 2021, the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce and Montgomery County Police 3rd District created the Silver Spring Safety Alliance, an initiative that will enable the business community to be more engaged and will actively reduce and prevent crime through cooperation, education, and most importantly, communication.

In coordination with the County’s Services to Prevent and End Homelessness team, SSUD has made great strides to coordinate inter-agency response and engagement in support of vulnerable populations in downtown Silver Spring. It is easiest (and often best) to funnel requests for service and engagement of the unhoused community through the County’s homeless hotline: (240) 907-2688. The line is open 24/7. You can also request assistance and share pictures through [email protected].
The Silver Spring Urban District (SSUD) provides enhanced services to the Central Business District to ensure that downtown Silver Spring is maintained as a clean, safe and attractive environment to promote a vibrant social and business climate to support the long-term economic viability and vitality. SSUD services include ambassadorship, security, streetscape maintenance, walkway repairs, tree maintenance, marketing, promotions and special events.
