Volunteer, Partner with GSSCC Member Non-Profits this Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, many will be looking to volunteer and give back to their community. The Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce has many wonderful non-profit organizations offering varied volunteer opportunities found below. Whether you’re looking to bring your office together for a group activity or are looking for something you can do on your own, there is an option for everyone.

A Wider Circle

There are 4 things you can do:
​

• Assemble a Thanksgiving basket - Each year, A Wider Circle give out 300+ baskets to families in DC and MD. The baskets include a set of non-perishables and a gift card for fresh grocery items. Please drop off the basket to us between October 24 and November 11, and we’ll get it to a family in need. 
• Sponsor a family in December - Give on a personal level by matching with a family and shopping for a toy/gift, coat, and book for each child in the home, as well as a retail gift card for any adult. 
• Donate new toys - Drop off new unwrapped gifts or send them to A Wider Circle to arrive between November 1 and December 10. Toys will be distributed to families visiting it's Center during the month of December and to more than 5,000 children living in public housing in DC. 
• Volunteer opportunities include - package delivery/drivers in the month of December; host a non-perishable food drive; create care packages; support A Wider Circle's work with a donation.

Community Bridges

This holiday season, Community Bridges would like to promote the following volunteer opportunities:
​

• Holiday Volunteering December 16 - On Saturday, December 16, from 10 a.m.  to 5 p.m., Community Bridges will be partnering with the Rotary Club of Downtown Silver Spring and is looking for volunteers to help in both wrapping and delivering gifts from it's Adopt a Family Program.
• Holiday Volunteering December 21 - On Thursday, December 21, Community Bridges will be partnering with Rainbow Community Development Center to distribute Holiday Food for Community Bridges families. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, traffic directing, greeting cars, packing food, and delivering to the homes of CB families.
• Holiday Giving 2023: Adopt a Community Bridges family this holiday season. Available families are numbered to protect their privacy and upon registration, specifics on the family wish list will be revealed.

Interfaith Works

This holiday season, Interfaith Works would like to promote the following volunteer opportunities:
​

• Adopt a Shelter - provide meals during the holiday season to one of our shelters (located in Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Derwood). Sign Up here.
• Host an Activity at a Shelter - provide therapeutic or recreational events at a shelter, such as game night or art therapy. Recurring activities are preferred. Please contact Sam Cheakalos to schedule an activity at a shelter.
• Host a Drive - Interfaith Works is always looking for volunteers to host drives for the following NEW items: socks, underwear, hats, gloves, and cleaning supplies.
• Shop the 2023 Holiday Wish List - These are the common needs for all programs throughout Interfaith Works.
• Participate in current Coat Drive - The Olney Theatre Center is hosting a coat-drive for Interfaith Works from Friday, November 10, to Sunday, December 31. Anyone attending a show is encouraged to donate a coat.

One Montgomery Green

​Upcoming volunteer opportunities:
​​

• Green Drinks - On Tuesday, November 21, at The Urban Winery, Pulse IQ will speak about BEPS (Building Energy Performance Standards) and One Montgomery Green will be collecting food donations for Shepherd's Table.
• Holiday on Duty - Thursday, November 23, providing meals to on duty safety personnel during the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce event.
• Giving Tuesday - Tuesday, November 28, collecting donations for the organization and the programs it run.
• Angels for Children Toy Drive - hosted by Montgomery Housing Partnership handing out toys on Christmas.
• Gift Outside the Box - Campaign with the Department of Environmental Protection to encourage people to by local, gift experiences, gift greener, give back, and reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Shepherd's Table

​Shepherd’s Table provides meals, clothing, and eye clinic services to individuals experiencing food insecurity,  homelessness and poverty. As temperatures drop, the number of meal guests increase. Located in downtown Silver Spring, Shepherd's Table has year round need for volunteers, especially on weekdays. Beginning in January, it will need volunteers on weekends as well.

Individuals, families, and other groups can volunteer to help serve a meal or work behind the scenes for a preparing food for chefs to cook, and packing to-go meals that will be delivered to those in need.  There is also volunteering in the clothing closet to sort and organize clothing donations.

Shepherd’s Table provides SSL hours for students looking to complete their school-related volunteer requirements. Note that the minimum age for volunteers is 13, accompanied by an adult. Volunteers age 16 and above can volunteer on their own.
